SIERRA DE ALBARRACÍN
Scientific name: Ovis orientalis musimon
Order: Artiodactyla
Family: Bovidae
Similar in appearance and size to a domestic sheep, the mouflon is believed to be the ancestor of our sheep livestock. Males have horns that grow in a spiral shape. The horns begin to grow right after birth, are brown in color, grow by annual ridges or rings, and are never shed. Females may or may not have small horns.
Its coat changes depending on the season. In winter it is dark brown, while in summer it tends to be lighter. Both sexes have a light-colored facial patch, and white legs, belly, and rump patch. Males also show an additional patch on the back that resembles a “saddle.”
Shoulder height is around 70 cm. Males do not exceed 45 kg in weight, while females are around 25 kg.
