A large canid with a big head and elongated snout, triangular ears, and forward-facing amber-colored eyes.
It has a sleek body and sturdy legs with dark markings on the front (signas). Its coat ranges from dark brown to reddish, and is denser in winter. It has a dark patch over the rump, known as the “saddle,” and the tail is darker than the rest of the body.
Males are larger than females, averaging about 110 cm in length and weighing between 35 and 40 kg, while females usually weigh around 30 kg.
