SIERRA DE ALBARRACÍN
Scientific name: Genetta genetta
Order: Carnivora
Family: Viverridae
Other names: genet, small-spotted genet, or “civet cat” (musk cat)
The genet is the only representative of the Viverridae family in Europe.
It is about the size of a domestic cat, with a long, slender body, short limbs, and a thick tail as long as the length of its head plus body. The body can reach 55–60 cm, a length that equals or exceeds the tail, and it can measure over one meter from head to tail. Shoulder height is about 20 cm, and its weight ranges from 1.2 to 2.5 kg.
Its coat is yellowish-gray with dark spots that tend to line up lengthwise. The tail has eight to ten dark rings. The snout is pointed and whitish, with a large dark patch on each side. It has large ears, and its hands and feet have five toes with semi-retractable claws.
Males tend to be larger and heavier than females, but differences among adult individuals are not large.
