It is a large, heavy animal that can reach 200 kg, up to two meters in length, and a shoulder height of between one and one and a half meters. The body is reddish-brown except for the belly and rump, which are white.
The young have a reddish coloration with white spots that help them hide from predators.
It shows marked sexual dimorphism: females are smaller and less robust than males, and they do not have antlers.
Lifespan: 20 years.
