It is a bovid smaller than a deer, with a strong, robust build. The male has large, unbranched horns that curve slightly backward. In the female, they are small and slender.

Its coat, grayish-brown on the back and white on the belly, varies throughout the year. The snout is somewhat shorter than that of the domestic goat.

The presence of a beard in males, their greater bulk, and the wider extent of black markings distinguish them from females. Males stand about 75 cm at the shoulder and can weigh up to 100 kg. Females stand about 60 cm and weigh between 30 and 45 kg.
